Sound the Alarm and Save Lives
Published on September 30, 2024
Nearly three of every five home fire deaths occur in households without smoke alarms. The first line of defense? Smoke alarms.
On October 8 and 10, 2024, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue (SFFR) will conduct a Sound the Alarm event during Fire Prevention Week. Teams will conduct mass smoke alarm installations throughout the Sioux Falls community. Residents who own their homes and either don’t have smoke alarms or have alarms older than ten years can call the 211 Helpline Center to get on the list for new installations. This is a free service.
“Every second counts when a fire breaks out, and smoke alarms are our best defense against loss of life and property in our community,” says Fire Inspector Brandon Fey.
Requests can be made by calling the Helpline Center at 211, after which SFFR will contact callers to schedule an installation time on October 8 or 10, or at callers’ availability. SFFR and other City employees will install the alarms provided in partnership with the American Red Cross.
Did you know? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a reported fire by 50 percent. Ensuring your smoke alarms are functioning and up-to-date is crucial for your safety. Don’t miss this opportunity to protect your home and loved ones!
