City Names New Chief Building Official

Published on October 01, 2024

The City of Sioux Falls will have a new Chief Building Official, Neil King, following the retirement of Butch Warrington, who served in the role for seven years.

The Chief Building Official leads the Building Services division of the City’s Planning and Development Services department. Building Services oversees plan reviews, permit issuance, and inspections and has 34 employees. The Chief Building Official is also responsible for the monthly and annual building permit statistics that encompass total residential and commercial building permits and total construction valuation of projects in Sioux Falls. During Warrington’s tenure, the City of Sioux Falls reached a record $1.9 billion permit valuation in 2022.

Warrington joined the City in 1999 as a Mechanical Inspector, became a Plans Examiner in 2002, and Chief Building Official in 2017. He retires on October 11.

“Our team does incredible work to ensure homes and businesses in Sioux Falls are built safely,” Warrington said. “Over the past few years, our community has experienced record growth, and as such, our team has persevered through a record workload. While that was no small feat, I’m most proud of our team members and the great culture we’ve built together. I have no doubt Neil will lead this team well into the future.”

King has been the City’s Building Inspection Manager since 2018, and he joined the City in 2015 as a Building Inspector. King will officially take the helm on October 14.

“Neil has demonstrated his leadership ability time and time again as he’s overseen our inspections team,” said Jeff Eckhoff, Director of Planning and Development Services. “I have full confidence he will be part of the next generation of leadership within the City to keep our community growing and thriving while leading an innovative and collaborative team.”
