Seasonal Staff Sought for Parks and Recreation

Published on March 13, 2024

With summer approaching, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has 150 seasonal positions left to fill. A particular need exists for park maintenance crews and lifeguards. The new hires will bring the department to its full seasonal staffing level of approximately 500 workers by May 1.

Summer is the most active time for Parks and Recreation, with the opening of outdoor aquatic facilities and hosting tournaments. Seasonal staff play a significant role in achieving this goal by ensuring the parks are clean, safe, and well-maintained.

The department offers flexibility in scheduling and competitive wages ranging from $17 to $19 per hour. Lifeguard positions are ideal for teenagers 15 and older looking for a rewarding job, while park maintenance positions are suited for individuals 18 and older who are available to work from March to September.

Interested applicants can get on-the-spot tentative job offers at walk-in interviews throughout March at Park Maintenance Headquarters (2401 West 49th Street) on March 14 and 20 from 1 to 4 p.m.

“Sioux Falls is growing, and with it, the popularity of sports like softball, football, and soccer,” Brett Kollars, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, said. “Park maintenance staff is crucial in keeping our fields ready for extended seasons.”

Sioux Falls parks welcome millions of visitors annually, with Yankton Trail attracting 350,000 people and Falls Park drawing over 700,000 visitors each year. Dedicated summer staff are vital in preparing and maintaining these parks for the anticipated high volume of visitors.

Lifeguards, in particular, play a vital role in keeping swimmers safe at Sioux Falls’ six outdoor aquatic facilities, which attract thousands of visitors each summer. Last year, 206,661 visitors enjoyed the outdoor pools.

“Witnessing lifeguards learn valuable life skills throughout the summer fills me with hope for the future. I genuinely care about these kids,” Jean Pearson, Recreation Program Coordinator for Aquatics, said. “I want nothing more than to see them thrive and contribute positively to our city.”
