Recycling in Sioux Falls

Don't Trash Your Recycling Logo

The City of Sioux Falls uses a single-stream recycling system, which means that all recycling is collected together in one bin or dumpster. All garbage haulers are required to provide a recycle bin or dumpster at each residential property within Sioux Falls.

Remember, don't trash your recycling: 75% of landfill waste is recyclable.

How do I recycle?

Before taking out the trash, there are a few pointers to remember:

  • Items must be empty, rinsed if possible. Food containers and boxes can be recycled—including pizza boxes—as long as the recycleable material is still in good shape.
  • Do not put trash in the recycling bin or dumpster.
  • Place them loosely in your bin.
  • Do not bag recyclable items except for shredded paper. Any other bagged items will not be recycled and will be sent to the landfill.

These steps are the best way to guarantee that recycling will make a difference. By recycling, we can extend the life of the landfill and gives valuable materials a second life.

What Can I Recycle?

Know the four: Paper, plastic, metal and glass. All four go into the same recycling bin and are sorted at the recycling facility.

Green Waste Disposal Guide

Yard waste does not belong in with your regular trash. Contact your hauler, compost at home, or take out to the landfill for composting. No plastic bags please. The City hosts seasonal branch and leaf drop-off sites in the spring and fall that are free for Sioux Falls residents to use.

Green waste can be brought to the landfill. Grass, leaves, and plant cuttings are composted while branches, logs and wood pallets are turned into mulch. Please note that wood must be separate from yard waste.
