Public Works

When the lights come on, the water runs clean, and the roads are clear on a winter morning — that’s Public Works.

The department’s more than 300 employees (with additional seasonal crews each year) keep Sioux Falls running in every season. They maintain more than 3,500 lane-miles of streets, deliver clean drinking water around the clock, treat wastewater for the region, operate the City’s electric light system, and manage a regional landfill serving five counties.

In 2025, the City completed its largest infrastructure project ever — a $215 million expansion of the Water Reclamation Facility.
