Light, Power and Traffic provides electricity that powers homes, businesses, and government services. We maintain the city's streetlights, traffic signals, roadway signs, fiber connections, and traffic detection cameras.

Department Facts

  • Power Supply: We receive electricity through the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), supplemented by Heartland Energy to meet daily needs and provide backup support.
  • Streetlights: We maintain over 24,000 fixtures throughout the city.
  • Traffic Signs: We oversee more than 90,000 signs within city limits.
  • Traffic Signals: We maintain 310 signalized intersections out of approximately 5,790 total intersections in Sioux Falls.
  • Fiber Optics: We manage over 156 miles of cable, providing critical connectivity for traffic signals, public safety facilities, and other city buildings.
