Potholes form when water seeps into cracks in the road and freezes, causing the ground underneath to expand and weaken. As the ice melts, it leaves an empty space that can't support the weight of vehicles. When cars drive over these weak spots, the asphalt collapses and creates a hole.
Crews fill the holes using specialized asphalt mixes to restore a smooth driving surface. In the winter, "cold mix" is used as a temporary fix because it can be applied in freezing temperatures. During the summer, "hot mix" is used for a more permanent, durable repair that bonds better with the existing road.
Residents are encouraged to report issues they encounter on the roadways. Service requests are generated by our online reporting system or by the Pothole Hotline (605-367-8600).
