Unity Bridge

Project Summary 

  • The project encompasses Sixth Street from the Big Sioux River to Weber Avenue.
  • The project will reconstruct the bridge, update underground utilities, feature new streetscaping, and construct rail crossing elements for future whistle reduction zone.

Project Update 7/1/2024  

  • The 6th Street Bridge is now lit from below with a warm glow. Paving is underway on both sides of the BNSF railroad. BNSF crews and the contractor will be returning this month to complete the railroad crossing signals. Regular rains in the past month have slowed progress, but the project is targeting an August completion.

Construction of underground utilities east of the BNSF Railroad is wrapping up and paving will begin soon. BNSF crews and contractor are working on the underground infrastructure for the railroad crossing signals. Work on the sidewalk and streetscape continues.

Commuter Route Information: 

  • Access to LSS and Cherapa II is now on 6th Street via Phillips Ave over the new bridge.
  • 6th Street is closed to through traffic and pedestrians from Phillips Ave to Weber Ave.
  • Access to the Harvester Building, Sioux Steel, and Raven will be maintained via 6th Street from Phillips Ave.
  • The River Greenway Recreation Trail is open.
