Carver Gallery
In 2019, Mayor TenHaken unveiled the Carver Gallery in City Hall, named in honor of South Dakota art pioneer Charlotte Carver. The gallery features a rotating collection of local artwork throughout City Hall, including in the Mayor’s Office, allowing the public to enjoy the creativity of the region's artists.
Starting in 2026, the gallery will introduce an annual rotation of local art. For the first six months, selected artists will each have one featured piece on display. Artists who live or work primarily in the Sioux Falls area can apply by submitting an application along with photographs of their 2D work created within the past three years. A selection panel of artists will jury the submissions and select the artists who will exhibit in the gallery.
As part of the exhibition, the public will be invited to vote for their favorite artist in the People's Choice competition. The winning artist will then have the opportunity to display their work (15 to 20 pieces) in the entire gallery for about six months. The City will purchase one work of art from the winning artist to display in a public space, growing the City's art collection. This piece will be selected by the panel of artists and approved by the Visual Arts Commission.
Who Was Charlotte Carver
The Charlotte Carver Gallery is named in honor of Charlotte Visser Carver, a beloved arts advocate who helped shape Sioux Falls into a vibrant, community-centered city. She believed art should be part of everyday life—accessible, visible, and welcoming to all—which is reflected in the gallery’s location in City Hall.
After moving to Sioux Falls, Charlotte became deeply involved in the arts as a flutist and later business manager for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, and as the first Executive Director of the South Dakota Arts Council, where she spent more than two decades strengthening support for artists and arts organizations statewide.
Through her leadership, service on numerous boards, and commitment to arts education and public spaces, she left a lasting impact on the community. Honored with awards including the Governor’s Honorary Award in the Arts and the Sioux Falls Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Individual Advocacy in the Arts, Charlotte’s legacy lives on through this gallery, celebrating her belief that the arts belong at the heart of civic life.
