How to make a public records request

If a public record is not listed in the table above, you will need to file a request. Start a request by selecting the public records request form below that best matches your needs.

Records that cannot be released

Under South Dakota Law, not all records are subject to disclosure. Read the full statute at South Dakota Codified Laws, Chapter 1-27.

Before you file

One request for most records

One City records request returns one response with all non-police records from every City department. Filing more than one request for the same property may delay the process and staff time spent combining requests may add additional response time.

Police record requests cannot be combined with other requests.

Request best practices

Include as much information as possible with your request:

  • Address or parcel number
  • Date range
  • Type of document
  • Incident or reference number
  • Current contact information

After you file

What happens after a request is made

You will receive a confirmation that includes a request number you can use to check on the status of your request. Do not file a second request as a status check. Your request will be sent to the relevant City department(s) to collect the requested information and determine if any costs will be assessed for the request.

Staff may contact you before completing your request to provide a cost estimate or confirm the request and its scope.

Fee schedule

View the current fee schedule City Ordinance Chapter 41 Fees

A majority of public records requests are free. The City of Sioux Falls charges a fee when a request requires more than 1 hour of staff time and/or to cover materials. If your request will cost more than $50, our staff will contact you with an estimate before starting the request. You have the option to approve the fee, narrow the request, or withdraw the request.
