The First to Serve

Metro Communications provides 911 service to the residents of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County. Our operators gather information from callers to determine priority and resources needed. Metro partners with other city and county agencies such as police and sheriff’s departments, emergency medical services, and fire rescue teams to dispatch crucial help when seconds matter.

The team at Metro Communications also assists with non-emergency calls, as well as facilitating large-scale disaster response with local, state and federal authorities.

How is the 911 system structured?

Metro Communications operates under Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and its assistant fire chief with assistance from the Metro Executive Board.

The 911 system has grown since the Sioux Falls Police Department started it prior to 1980. Today, Metro employs about 55 employees including nine shift supervisors, nine advanced communications dispatchers and 28 dispatchers. Metro Communications is located at the new state-of-the-art Public Safety Campus located in northeast Sioux Falls near Interstate 90 and Veterans Parkway.
