41st Street and Louise Avenue: Street and Utility Improvements

A grpahic rendering of the proposed construction and changes to the 41st street and Louise Avenue intersection

Project Overview

The City of Sioux Falls is entering the final design phase for major improvements to the intersection of 41st Street and Louise Avenue. This project represents the next phase of a long-term strategy to enhance the 41st Street and Louise Avenue corridors, building upon previous work completed at the I-29 interchange and nearby arterial segments.

Project Background

A 2012 corridor study identified this intersection as a critical area for improvement due to high traffic congestion and crash rates. Findings from that study indicated that widening 41st Street and implementing raised medians are necessary to accommodate traffic forecasts through 2050.

The primary goals of this project are to:

  • Improve safety for both pedestrians and commuters.
  • Decrease travel times throughout the corridor.
  • Increase intersection capacity to handle current and future traffic volumes.
  • Enhance the overall aesthetics of the corridor.

Project Features & Benefits

This comprehensive reconstruction aims to modernize aging infrastructure and improve the daily experience for the thousands of commuters who travel through this area. Key features include:

  • Complete Resurfacing: Replacement of the existing pavement to ensure a smoother, more durable driving surface.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Significant improvements to underground public and private utilities.
  • Traffic Technology: Installation of new traffic signals and energy-efficient street lighting.
  • Enhanced Safety: Implementation of raised medians to control traffic flow and reduce crash rates.
