Chief, Sioux Falls Police Department

Chief Jonathan Thum began his career with the Sioux Falls Police Department (SFPD) in 2005 as a Patrol Officer. In his 18 years with the department, he has worked as a Field Training Officer, Department Training Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant and SWAT Commander. Those experiences provided a high-level strategic perspective and expertise in both law enforcement and community relations.

His job description is entwined with the department’s mission statement: “Partnering with the community to serve, protect and promote quality of life.”

Raised in Sioux Falls, Chief Thum hold a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Sioux Falls, where he previously served as an adjunct instructor. He and his wife Melissa have three sons, ages 12, 11, and 9.

Professional passion: “What drives me is the desire to serve my community and my department.”

Best part of my job: “It’s seeing the role our agency and officers play in the community and the public support it generates. Very few police departments receive this type of support from their residents, and we are appreciative and proud to serve them.”

Personal interests: Family, camping, and snowboarding. Just being able to watch my kids’ activities is a nice vacation for me.”
