2023 Public Safety Trends Stable Despite Community Growth

As we grow, Sioux Falls remains a safe community to live, work, and play. The crime rate in Sioux Falls generally remained stable in 2023 compared to previous years, despite an increase in Sioux Falls’ population. Major crime categories, including homicides, rapes, domestic assaults, robberies, and burglaries, all decreased in reported crime compared to previous years.
Over the last ten years, what has grown is the number of stolen vehicles in Sioux Falls. The vast majority of these stolen vehicles had the keys left inside, making them easy targets for criminals. A public service campaign focused on unlocked vehicles aimed to reduce this preventable crime.
“Sioux Falls is a safe community, and the police department continues to look at new ways to help keep it safe while working to prevent crime,” said Chief Jon Thum. “The formation of a Violent Crimes Unit has exceeded expectations as they work to remove violent offenders from the streets.”;
Also, a record amount of Fentanyl was seized last year in Sioux Falls. There are many crimes that surround illegal drugs, including theft, robbery, and assaults. While the number of all drug overdose cases increased, the number of deaths due to drug overdose is at a three-year low.
Working with community partners to provide both education and prevention plays a crucial role in helping people overcome drug addiction. The Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force focuses on identifying those responsible for supplying and distributing illicit drugs in the Sioux Falls area, making a positive difference in the community.
“Our law enforcement community in Sioux Falls is one of the best in the nation, working closely alongside residents and businesses to not only monitor and curb concerning trends but also ensure our city remains a safe place to live, work, and raise a family,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken. “As Sioux Falls continues to grow, maintaining a strong public safety environment and a safe city remains my highest priority.”
