City’s Annual Hydrant Flushing Begins Monday

Published on March 23, 2026

Beginning Monday, March 23, the City of Sioux Falls Water Division will start its annual hydrant flushing program. During the flushing process, crews will work from the north side of the city to the south, opening hydrants and flushing water through them.

Hydrant flushing helps clear water mains of sediments, ensures hydrants are operational and conducts flow testing of the water distribution system. The process typically takes several weeks.

“The hydrant flushing program is a key part of our preventive maintenance efforts,” said Josh Lewis, the city’s water distribution system supervisor. “It helps us continue delivering safe drinking water and ensures hydrants are ready to perform in an emergency.”

Residents with crews working in their neighborhood are encouraged to check their cold tap water for clarity before doing laundry. If the water is discolored, run the cold water faucet for a few minutes or until the water clears, before use. Water discoloration caused by the flushing program does not pose a health risk and may be used, but it could cause staining.

Motorists should be aware, slow down near field crews and avoid water flowing from hydrants.
