City Adds Indoor Playground, Upgrades to Westside Recreation Center

Published on April 23, 2026

After just over a year of taking ownership of the Westside Recreation Center (WSR), the City of Sioux Falls is highlighting a series of facility upgrades, including the addition of a new indoor playground.

Designed for children ages 11 and younger, the indoor playground features a toddler play area with a sculptural climber, a multi-level play structure with slides, a rock wall and several other play elements. The 1,600-square-foot room also includes “Stomp,” an interactive play attraction designed for high-energy activity within a compact space. The experience allows one to four players to compete against each other in a fast-paced game that emphasizes movement and coordination.

“The indoor playground enhances our ability to serve young families by giving children more ways to play, explore and stay active year-round,” said Brett Kollars, assistant director for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. “We’re excited to continue improving this facility so it remains a welcoming space for all residents.”

Additionally, the city has completed several other improvement projects at the WSR. Updates include new carpet and lighting, parking lot improvements, resurfacing the gym and group exercise studio courts and a new roof that is underway.

In 2025, the WSR hosted more than 188,000 visitors and now has more than 4,400 passholders. Year-to-date, the facility has recorded 76,463 visits, an increase of approximately 19% compared with the same period last year.

Visitors can access indoor aquatics, a fitness area and multiple sport courts. The indoor pool includes slides, a hot tub, a sauna and a steam room, along with full-amenity locker rooms. The fitness area offers a variety of weight and cardio equipment, an indoor walking track and group fitness studios. The WSR also features indoor courts for basketball, volleyball, pickleball and other activities, as well as an outdoor court and two racquetball courts.

The WSR offers a full slate of fitness classes, youth programs and family activities throughout the year, including daily cycling classes and Stay Active and Independent classes. Open swim, pickleball, basketball, volleyball and racquetball, along with access to the walking track, are available year-round during regular facility hours. “As we continue expanding programs offered at the WSR, our goal is to ensure residents of every age and interest can find something that keeps them engaged,” said Jackie Nelson, recreation manager for the city. “The variety of classes and activities we provide is key to what makes this facility a valuable community resource.”

Annual, monthly and daily passes are available, with prices varying by age group and household category. Reduced income rates are available for qualifying families and individuals. For pricing, to sign up or for more information, visit siouxfalls.gov/westside.
