City Breaks Ground on Fire Station 13

Published on May 14, 2026

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue (SFFR) officials, city and community leaders and project partners gathered Thursday to celebrate the groundbreaking of the City of Sioux Falls’ newest fire station, Fire Station 13, located at 5200 N. Career Ave.

The new station represents a continued investment in public safety infrastructure as the Sioux Falls community grows. The stand-alone station will be a single-story building encompassing approximately 12,500 square feet. In addition to housing firefighting operations, the facility will include workspace for fire and building inspectors.

“The growth we are seeing across Sioux Falls makes investments like Fire Station 13 essential to maintaining the high level of service our community expects,” said Matt McAreavey, fire chief for SFFR. “This new station will help improve response times, strengthen coordination among our teams and ensure the department is prepared to meet the public safety needs of the community for years to come.”

Fire Station 13’s design will support more efficient inspection services and help maintain emergency response coverage as development continues in northwestern Sioux Falls. The Sioux Falls City Council approved the land purchase and authorized the project in January.

Once operational, Fire Station 13 will add 15 full-time positions. The facility will house about 23 employees, including firefighters working around the clock and inspectors working standard business hours.

The project team includes architect TSP Inc. and general contractor Puetz Design + Build, Inc. Construction is expected to be completed in March 2027.

Founded in 1880, SFFR serves the Sioux Falls community through fire suppression, emergency medical response, hazardous materials response, rescue operations, fire prevention and public safety education. The department currently operates 12 fire stations throughout the city and conducts training at the Public Safety Campus.
