The City of Sioux Falls’ Light, Power & Traffic division has moved into a new 54,000-square-foot building at 4501 E. 60th St. N., bringing operations that were previously spread across multiple facilities together in one location.
The new campus, located near the city’s public safety campus and water reclamation facility, was constructed beginning in April 2025 and now houses approximately 30 employees. The additional space provides room for equipment, supplies and maintenance work as the division supports Sioux Falls’ growing power, transportation and communications infrastructure.
“This new facility brings our Light, Power & Traffic operations together in one location and gives our employees the space, tools and resources they need to efficiently and effectively serve a growing community,” said Ryan Johnson, utility administrator for the city. “From keeping the lights on to maintaining traffic signals and the fiber network, this team plays an essential role in the daily life of Sioux Falls.”
The $14.7 million building includes an expansive garage, workshop, signal and sign room, expanded storage areas and an outdoor supply yard. Consolidating the division’s operations gives employees greater access to equipment, supplies and workspaces while supporting the city’s ongoing infrastructure needs.
“This facility brings our people, equipment and resources together in a way that will make our day-to-day operations more efficient,” said Jerry Jongeling, Light, Power & Traffic superintendent. “Having the space to store equipment and supplies and safely move materials throughout the facility, will help our crews work more effectively and continue providing reliable service to our community.”
The Light, Power & Traffic team, a division of the Public Works department, maintains and supports infrastructure that serves residents, businesses and government operations across Sioux Falls. The division provides electricity and maintains streetlights, traffic signals, roadway signs, fiber connections and traffic detection cameras.
The division’s infrastructure includes:
- Power supply: The city receives electricity through the Western Area Power Administration, supplemented by Heartland Energy, to meet daily needs and provide backup support. The city’s light and power utility serves residential and public sector customers, like city facilities, schools and the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.
- Streetlights: More than 24,000 fixtures are maintained throughout Sioux Falls.
- Traffic signs: More than 90,000 signs are overseen within city limits.
- Traffic signals: The division maintains 310 signalized intersections among approximately 5,790 total intersections in Sioux Falls.
- Fiber optics: More than 156 miles of fiber cable are managed by the division, providing critical connectivity for traffic signals, public safety facilities and other city buildings.
“This is an investment in the infrastructure that supports Sioux Falls every day,” said Andy Berg, city engineer. “As the community continues to grow, we need facilities that can keep pace with the demands placed on our power, transportation and communications systems. Bringing these operations together gives the city a strong foundation to serve Sioux Falls today and into the future.”
