Safe Disposal of Medications

Medications drop box

Disposing of medical waste like old medicines, needles, and syringes is really important for keeping everyone safe.

If you dispose of these items incorrectly, you could put yourself, garbage collectors, or others at risk. These items can also get into our rivers and streams, which can harm animals and the environment.

Drug Take Back Program

The Sioux Falls Police Department offers a "Drug Take Back" program, allowing residents to dispose of unused or expired medications in a secure, locked container.

The disposal container is located in the lobby of the Law Enforcement Center at 320 W 4th St. and is accessible to the public from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • Please leave medications in their original container with the name of the medication clearly visible. Black out or remove any personal information from the label.
  • Avoid flushing medications down the toilet or drain

Properly disposing of unused medications through this program helps keep our environment safe!

If you’re unable to drop off your medication, review the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s guidelines for safely disposing of unused or expired medicine.
