The City of Sioux Falls and the VA Medical Center have partnered to provide a safe system for disposing of needles and syringes.red sharps collection container

The Sharps Disposal Program is available to residents living in Minnehaha, Lake, Lincoln, McCook, or Turner Counties who use needles, syringes, lancets, or other sharps at home.

Note: This program is for residential use only. Businesses should contact the Environmental Division for disposal options.

How the Program Works

Pick up a Sharps Collector Container

Residents may pick up a free puncture-resistant sharps collector container at one of the following participating locations:

Lewis Drug Pharmacies:

  • All Lewis Drug locations in Sioux Falls, including Sanford Hospital (Medical Bldg. 2), and Sanford Clinic (69th St. and Minnesota Ave.).
  • Lewis Drug locations in Brandon, Canton, Dell Rapids, Madison, Lennox, Viborg, and Tea.

Hy-Vee Pharmacies

Return the Sharps Container

When your container is full, return it to the location where you received it, and a new, empty container will be provided in its place.

Sharps Container Use Guidelines

  • Only place needles, syringes, lancets, and transdermal patches in the red sharps container.
  • Make sure to tightly seal the lid before moving the container for disposal.
  • Hand the sharps container directly to the pharmacy attendant.
  • If you don't automatically receive a new, empty sharps container, be sure to ask to pharmacy attendant.
  • Do NOT use or bring any unapproved containers to the pharmacy.
  • Do NOT throw the sharps container in the trash or recycling at home or anywhere else.
  • Do NOT add bleach or chlorine to the sharps container.
