Leaf and Branch Drop Sites

The City of Sioux Falls offers free, seasonal Leaf & Branch Drop Sites for residents. These sites are available to residents of Sioux Falls and the entire five-county area served by the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill, which includes Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties.
Drop Sites Locations:
- Lyon Boulevard drop site: Access is available from West 12th Street or West Madison Street.
- Chambers Street drop site: Located just west of the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility (1015 East Chambers Street). Access is available from North Cliff Avenue.
These are the scheduled dates for this year. (All dates are tentative and subject to adjustment based on weather conditions, operational requirements, or unforeseen circumstances.)
- Spring 2026 Drop Off Period: April 11 to May 24
- Fall 2026 Drop Off Period: September 19 to November 29
The sites are strictly for residential use only, accepting leaves and branches transported in personal vehicles such as cars, pickups, full-size SUVs, vans, and trailers. Materials from lawn service companies and commercial businesses will not be accepted at the drop sites; instead, commercial entities must take their materials directly to the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill.
What to Know Before You Go
- Leaves and branches must be placed in separate piles.
- Paper bags are accepted.
- All loads must be tarped or in an enclosed vehicle.
- Plastic bags, tree stumps, rubble, and household garbage are NOT accepted.
The Sioux Falls Regional Landfill provides these free drop sites for residents to discard leaf and branch yard waste. The drop sites are offered in the spring and fall and are typically open for several weeks at a time.
The opening of one or both sites is dependent upon site availability and operational support. This page will be updated seasonally as sites open and close.
Free Compost Available
Free finished compost is available to residents at both drop site locations when they are open. The finished compost is made from the leaves and grass clippings from previous Leaf & Branch collection events. Compost is available on a first-come, first-served basis and isn't bagged, so bring a shovel and some empty containers.
Using compost on lawns, gardens, farms, and parks adds organic matter to the soil. It boosts plant growth and helps conserve water. Compost also filters water, prevents nutrient runoff, and reduces soil erosion. Plus, it lowers our need for inorganic fertilizers. To learn more, visit The Benefits of Applying Compost.
