Smart Recycling for Public Events

Clearstream outdoor recycle bin with bag full of aluminum cans

Planning a public event involves more than just entertainment; it requires a strategic approach to waste management to keep our community clean and sustainable.

Use these smart recycling strategies to minimize contamination and maximize participation at your next gathering.

Pre-Event Planning

  • Bin Selection: Be sure to use waste containers that can withstand inclement weather at outdoor events. Consider using recycling containers with slotted lids to help reduce contamination.
  • Training: Before the event begins, hold a training session with staff or volunteers to clarify which materials are accepted for recycling and which are not, and how the recycling bins will be serviced. This will enable them to provide answers when asked by event attendees.

Waste Station Set-up

  • Accessible Locations: Set up trash and recycling bins throughout the event area. Ramp entrances, dining areas, and near restroom facilities are hot spots for waste disposal.
  • Pair Bins: Recycle bins should always be paired next to trash bins. There shouldn’t be any stand-alone recycling containers. Stand-alone recycling bins often become trash bins.
  • Clear Signage: Place large print, easy-to-understand signs on and above recycle bins. Labels with images showing what goes where, such as for aluminum cans and plastic bottles, are best.
  • Additional Signage: Depending on the venue, additional signs or labels, such as “No Cups” or “No Food Trays,” may be needed on recycling bins.
  • Seed the Bins: Kickstart recycling by adding a few empty cans or bottles into the recycling bins as a visual cue for event attendees. This is especially helpful when using transparent recycling containers or bags.

During the Event

  • Waste Station Monitors: Consider assigning volunteers to each waste station to help attendees place items in the correct containers.
  • Announcements: Coordinate with event staff to periodically broadcast recycling reminders over the PA system.
  • 2/3 Full: When using bags or liners, try to empty bins when they are two-thirds full, leaving enough room to tie the bags closed.
  • Keep It Clean: Wipe down lids so labels are legible. If bins look trashy, they will be treated that way.

Post Event Actions

  • No Plastic Bags: Remove recyclables from plastic bags before placing them in a central collection container.
  • Cleanup: Wipe down all bin lids and container sides so they are clean and ready for the next event.
  • Reporting: Share the amount of material recycled with attendees to encourage future participation.
