Grasscycling

A lawnmower cutting grass

Grasscycling is simply the process of leaving your grass clippings on the lawn after mowing.

Leaving grass clippings after mowing supplies your soil and lawn with essential water and nutrients. Grass clippings are roughly 80% water and can even help shade your lawn, preventing it from drying out.

Grasscycling also helps fertilize your yard by returning nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus from the grass clippings to your yard.

So why waste all that time and energy bagging it up?

Grasscycling Tips

  • Mow when your lawn is dry. Wet lawns can cause excessive clumping up of the grass clippings.
  • Set your lawn mower blades to cut at about 3 inches off the ground. Never cut your yard too short, or you’ll risk killing the grass.
  • Keep your lawn mower blades sharp. Dull blades can rip up grass stems, harming your lawn.
  • Use a mulching mower. Mulching mowers chop up the grass clippings into even smaller pieces, making decomposition quicker.
