Planning Academy

In 2050, where will people work, live, and shop in Sioux Falls? Sioux Falls is expected to grow from the current 213,000 to 370,000 people by then. Our metro area population could reach 500,000, and the city size could expand from 84 to 137 square miles in area. What will be our city’s challenges and opportunities for growth? The Citizen Planning Academy is an opportunity for Sioux Falls residents to assess and discuss the future of the city.

The goal of the Citizen Planning Academy is to empower residents to gain a better understanding of community planning and development, so that they can effectively engage in neighborhood planning efforts. Participants will come away not only with an understanding of how city planning helps shape our community, but also the importance that engagement and participation in local affairs play in the development of our community.

Topics will include an overview of city planning, comprehensive planning, planning engagement, zoning, planning housing, and planning roads, plus other items suggested by citizens. The event is open to the public, and residents are asked to register for the classes. By registering, the Planning staff will communicate directly with attendees and tailor the academy’s subject matter to match individual interests

The Citizen Planning Academy will be held across two classes at City Center, 231 N. Dakota Avenue, and also through Webex:

  • Monday, October 6, 2025 - 5:30–7:30 p.m. Class I
