Zak Okuwe has proudly called Sioux Falls home for more than 16 years. Born in Sudan, Zak and his family fled civil war as refugees, spending several years in Egypt before resettling in the United States. Those experiences shaped his deep appreciation for community, opportunity, and public service.
Zak graduated from Washington High School before earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Dakota. He works as a registered nurse at Sanford Health, where he cares for patients and advocates for healthier communities.
As the City Councilor for the Central District, Zak is focused on creating a safer, healthier, and more economically vibrant Sioux Falls. He is passionate about responsible growth, strong neighborhoods, public safety, and ensuring every resident has the opportunity to succeed.
Outside of his council responsibilities, Zak enjoys reading history and leadership books, exploring Sioux Falls' parks and trails, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
