Card Payment Fees

Processing fees no longer covered by City starting in 2026.

Credit and debit card processing fees for utility billing, City licenses and permits, and other services will be passed onto customers starting on Monday, January 5, 2026. This fee will be included whenever a credit or debit card is used to pay for services such as:

  • Utility bills.
  • Filing for a permit or license.
  • Using the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill.
  • Parks & Recreation programs and activities.

The processing fee will be passed directly from the payment processors to the customer. This fee will not exceed the processing cost set by the payment processor. No-fee payment options—cash, ACH bank transfers, and checks—will not be affected by this new policy.

Why the change?

The Sioux Falls City Council approved this policy change in July 2025 to shift processing fees to the customers who choose to use a credit or debit card. These convenience surcharges or service fees will no longer be funded by taxpayers. Most credit and debit card processing fees are currently paid for by the City.

What’s next

Customers will receive more information about credit or debit card processing fees as we approach the January 5 deadline. Updates to this policy will be published at siouxfalls.gov/card-payment-fees — as well as on utility bills and other City invoices and receipts.
