Keep Our Community Clean & Litter Free
Litter might look like a small problem, but it actually makes a big difference in our community.
When people leave trash on the streets, in parks, or near water, it hurts the environment, can make us sick, and makes our neighborhood look bad. It’s everyone’s job to stop litter and help clean it up.
Protect Our Waters & Wildlife
Strong winds can easily blow paper, bottles, and cans from our streets into parks and rivers. This pollutes the water and can hurt animals. Birds, fish, and other wildlife might eat litter because they think it’s food, which can make them very sick or even kill them. Litter can also cover areas where plants and animals live or block the sunlight plants need to grow. When we clean up litter, we help protect animals and keep nature healthy.
Prevent Flooding & Drainage Problems
Storm drains, ditches, and streams can become clogged when trash builds up. When water can't flow as it should, flooding can happen. This can damage houses, roads, and schools.
Never sweep or blow grass clippings, leaves, or branches into storm drains, as this can also cause flooding.
Protect Our Health & Safety
Stopping litter helps keep us safe and healthy. Trash can carry bacteria and chemicals into our waterways, potentially spreading disease. Broken glass or sharp metal can hurt people, especially kids and pets. A clean community is safer for everyone.
Pride in Our Community
When our streets and parks are clean, people want to spend more time there and are more likely to take care of them. Litter-free areas impress visitors and encourage others to dispose of their trash correctly. Research shows that clean neighborhoods can also raise the value of homes and businesses.
Make A Difference
Here are some simple things you can do to stop litter and help clean up:
- Dispose of trash properly in waste containers.
- Bag your home garbage when setting it out for collection.
- Quickly pick up litter that blows out of bins around your home.
- Remove garbage and recycle bins from the curbside on non-collection days.
- On high-wind days, keep your waste containers close to the house and secure the lids closed.
- Organize or volunteer for litter cleanup activities.
- Report problem litter areas to help resolve potential issues.
Keeping our community litter-free is a shared responsibility because every small action we take helps create a cleaner, safer place for everyone.
