Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs)

The Sioux Falls Police Department partnered with Flock Safety to provide Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) throughout the City.

The purpose of having ALPRs is to help efficiently investigate and solve crime in Sioux Falls. The automated system provides a real-time way of searching license plates for wanted people, missing people, stolen vehicles, or other crimes.

The system does not use facial recognition or collect biometric information. It is not used for any type of violations like speeds, red lights or parking.

Only properly trained sworn officers and police dispatchers are allowed access to the ALPR system. Department members shall not use or allow others to use the equipment or database records for any unauthorized purpose.

Data Collection and Retention

All ALPR data downloaded to the server should be stored for no longer than thirty (30) days and in accordance with the established South Dakota Records Retention laws.

Information gathered or collected, and records retained by the ALPR system will not be sold, accessed, or used for any purpose other than legitimate law enforcement or public safety purposes.
