Jacobson Plaza Skate Ribbon to Prep for Spring, Summer Season
Published on March 02, 2026
Due to current ice conditions and warm temperatures, the City of Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Department will start transitioning the Jacobson Plaza skate ribbon for the spring and summer season.
Beginning Tuesday, March 3, the Jacobson Plaza skate ribbon will be temporarily closed as staff convert the skate ribbon from ice back to concrete. If the weather cooperates, the skate ribbon is expected to reopen for roller and inline skating on Friday, March 6.
“Thank you, Sioux Falls, for making our first ice season at Jacobson Plaza such a success,” said Jackie Nelson, the city’s recreation manager. “Since opening on Nov. 21, 2025, the ice ribbon has welcomed nearly 23,000 skaters — an incredible milestone for our team. We’re thrilled with the community’s response and hope everyone who joined us on the ice enjoyed the experience as much as we did.”
The 14,000‑square‑foot skate ribbon was designed for year‑round recreation and features a concrete surface for warm‑weather months and refrigeration capabilities to convert the ribbon into ice during the winter months.
“We are very pleased with how the refrigeration system performed despite the warmer-than-average temperatures for this time of year,” said Josh Johnson, the city’s parks operations manager. “This first season provided many challenges and opportunities to grow, but the system operated efficiently and reliably, allowing us to provide a quality ice‑skating experience for our community. We are incredibly proud of our team and grateful for the community support. We are excited for the future at Jacobson Plaza!”
Once the skate ribbon reopens, supervised skating will run from 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 4 to 10 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. Admission will be free and skate rentals will be available for $3.
