City Unveils New Carver Gallery Exhibit

The City of Sioux Falls launched a new annual exhibition format for the Charlotte Carver Gallery on June 4, unveiling a juried exhibition of local artwork and announcing the selection of Breanna Fischer’s “Lighthouse” for purchase and display in city facilities.

The inaugural exhibition features 12 Sioux Falls artists and marks the beginning of a new annual program designed to highlight artists who live and work in the community. The exhibition will remain on display at City Hall through November.

“The Charlotte Carver Gallery reflects our commitment to making art a visible and meaningful part of civic life,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken. “This new annual exhibition creates an opportunity to celebrate the incredible talent in our community while welcoming residents and visitors to experience the creativity that helps define Sioux Falls.”

A juried committee selected Fischer’s oil-on-canvas painting “Lighthouse” for the city’s public art collection. The work features a moon that references feminine and maternal themes and a central figure that represents a desire to wrest control of fate, according to Fischer.

Community members attending the inaugural open house were the first to view the exhibition and participate in the debut of the gallery's People's Choice Award voting. Voting opened during the reception and will remain open throughout the summer. The artist receiving the most votes will be featured in a solo exhibition this winter.

Residents can vote for their favorite piece at siouxfalls.gov/carver_voting.

The new exhibition format expands the mission of the Charlotte Carver Gallery by creating an annual opportunity to showcase local artistic talent and increase public engagement with the arts.

“This exhibition highlights the depth, diversity, and vibrancy of Sioux Falls’ artistic community,” said Maren Engel, arts coordinator for the city. “By inviting the public to participate through the People’s Choice Award, we’re creating new ways for residents to connect with local artists and help shape the future of the gallery.”

Featured artists and artworks in the inaugural exhibition include:

  • Amy Jarding — “Day Parade”
  • Breanna Fischer — “Lighthouse”
  • Brittany Carmany — “Patchwork”
  • Caitlin Pisha — “Under the Same Sky”
  • Cameron Abbas — “Purpose Perspective”
  • Cole Casper — “Eastway Eve”

  • Hector Curriel — “The Falls”
  • Jana Anderson — “Downtown Delusions”
  • Lindsay Twa — “Bowing Sunflower”

Named in honor of South Dakota art pioneer Charlotte Carver, the gallery serves as a public space for exhibiting and celebrating local artwork.

The exhibition is free and open to the public during City Hall business hours, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
