2026 Runoff Election Recount Update
Published on July 06, 2026
Three individuals have been selected and approved to serve on a board to recount the results of the municipal runoff election held on June 23. The recount board includes attorney Justin Smith, designated by Christine Erickson, attorney Matthew Tysdal, designated by Jamie Smith, and retired circuit judge Rodney Steele, who is the Sioux Falls City Clerk’s Office designee and has been agreed upon by both Erickson and Smith.
The recount board is tentatively scheduled to begin its work Wednesday, July 8, at 9 a.m. in the Minnehaha County Commission Room, located on the third floor of the county’s administration building, 415 N. Dakota Ave. The public may attend and watch recount proceedings.
The Sioux Falls City Council certified the June 23 election results during a special city council meeting on June 26, and Erickson was issued a certificate of election, having won by two votes. On July 1, Smith filed a petition for a recount of the mayoral runoff election. The city clerk must convene the recount board by July 12, within 10 days of when the petition was filed.
If the recount changes the results of the election, the city clerk will then issue a new certificate of election to Smith.
A municipal election recount was last held in 2020 following a Sioux Falls City Council race. That recount took about 10 hours. The mayoral runoff recount is anticipated to take more time.
