City Unveils Updated Neighborhood Connect Platform

The City of Sioux Falls has launched a redesigned Neighborhood Connect platform, available on the city’s website, which allows residents to track development activity, property information and projects through customizable alerts and an updated map interface.

Neighborhood Connect, which the city introduced in 2020, has been updated with a new user experience focused on transparency, customized notifications and easier access to city information. The redesigned platform allows residents to select specific locations and receive alerts about the records and activities they choose to follow, including code enforcement cases, arts, culture and events, building permits, utilities and trees, and land use and site development.

"Residents need timely access to information about what's happening in the places they care about," said Jason Bieber, senior planner for the city. "The updated Neighborhood Connect platform makes it easier for people to stay informed about changes and activity in their neighborhoods, business areas and other places important to them."

Users can select areas across Sioux Falls, create email alerts and choose daily, weekly or monthly notification schedules. Alerts can be adjusted or removed at any time.

Key updates to Neighborhood Connect include:

Simplified categories: Record types have been reorganized using clearer, everyday language, making it easier for residents to find information without needing to understand municipal terminology.
New map layers: Users can view additional information through selectable map overlays, including official Neighborhood Associations and city parks.
Flexible notifications: Users can customize alerts based on their interests and preferred delivery schedule.

Neighborhood Connect also offers tools for residents and property owners to monitor activity that matters to them. Property owners can monitor rental properties and receive notifications about code cases associated with those addresses. Residents can follow special event permits to view upcoming festivals, races and markets. Users can also explore development trends through heat maps displaying commercial building permit activity and other city data.

Neighborhood Connect also integrates with the city’s enterprise land management software, allowing information to update automatically without requiring additional staff maintenance. The platform connects residents with detailed records through Customer Self Service, creating a 24-hour resource for accessing land management information.

To create alerts, users can visit neighborhoodconnect.siouxfalls.gov, create an account and select the datasets they want to follow, including:

Code Cases: This category covers reports and enforcement actions involving property maintenance, zoning and building issues, public health nuisances, drainage and environmental concerns, sidewalks and rights-of-way, snow and vegetation management, fire and wastewater issues, and other code compliance matters affecting the community.
Arts, Culture and Events: This category covers permits and requests for murals, concessions, sound levels and special events that support community activities and public gatherings.
Building Permits, Utilities and Trees: This category covers applications and permits for residential and commercial construction, zoning and fire reviews, utility services and infrastructure, floodplain development, signs and telecommunications, and tree planting, trimming and removal.
Land Use and Site Development: This category covers applications, reviews and approvals related to land planning, zoning, subdivisions and development activities.

After selecting a dataset, users can search for an address, define the area they want to monitor using the mile-radius slider and select "Create Alert."
