City to Begin Tuthill Park Sidewalk Construction Sept. 8

The City of Sioux Falls will begin construction Sept. 8 on a new sidewalk connecting Cliff Avenue to the upper parking lot at Tuthill Park. A phased closure of Tuthill Park Road is expected through Oct. 16. 

The project will be completed in phases and improve pedestrian access between Cliff Avenue and the upper portion of the park by providing a dedicated sidewalk that separates pedestrians from vehicle traffic. The new connection will give pedestrians a safer alternative to walking along the park road to reach the upper parking lot. 

“We know the park road closure will affect how visitors access Tuthill Park during construction,” said Josh Johnson, parks operations manager for the city. “The new sidewalk will provide a safer connection for pedestrians between Cliff Avenue and the upper parking lot, and we appreciate the public’s patience while the work is completed.” 

From Sept. 8 through Sept. 20, crews will complete the first two phases of construction. 

• Monday through Friday, the park road will open at 5 p.m. and close at 10 p.m. 
• The lower parking lot will open at 5 p.m. and close at 10 p.m.
• The lower shelter will remain available for use, but reservations will not be accepted for the duration of the project.
• On weekends, the park road and lower parking lot will remain open during normal park hours. 

From Sept. 21 through Oct. 16, crews will complete the third phase. 

• The park road will be closed at the gate.
• Vehicles will not have access to Upper Tuthill.
• The shelter, garden and house will be closed and unavailable for reservations.
• The lower Tuthill parking lot will remain open during normal park hours. 

Tuthill Park will remain open to the public during normal park hours throughout the project, but access will be limited by the road closure.
