Prevent Waste Fires – Keep Hazardous Materials Out of Your Waste
Improperly disposing of certain materials can lead to hazardous fires in garbage trucks, at processing facilities, or in landfills.
These items can easily ignite and pose serious risks to your family & neighbors, collection crews & waste workers, as well as firefighters & emergency responders.
NEVER place the following items in your waste containers:
Rechargeable batteries or items containing them — such as power tool batteries, electric toothbrushes, or vape pens.
Flammable or combustible liquids — such as gasoline or solvents.
Recently burned materials — such as fireplace ashes, cooking coals, or burn barrel debris.
Explosives - such as fireworks or ammunition.
Safe Disposal Tips
- Batteries, liquids, and fireworks should be properly disposed of at the Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility
- Let ashes and coals from fire pits, fireplaces, or grills cool for at least 3 days, or douse them thoroughly with water before disposing of them in the trash.
