Recycling at the Landfill
There’s more going on at the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill than just landfilling. Here are all the materials collected for recycling at the Landfill in 2024.
Check Out These Numbers!
12.9 tons of Grass Clippings & Leaves composted
4.9 tons of Limbs, Branches & Wooden Pallets mulched
25 tons of Single-Stream Materials (papers, bottles & cans)
Note: Scrap metal goes to local recyclers. Scrap tires are sent to Liberty Tire for recycling. Mattresses are recycled by Revolution⁴ Recycling. Cardboard and single-stream materials go to Millennium Recycling for processing
Residents of Sioux Falls and the five-county region of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties can receive free organic compost. The compost, made from leaves and grass clippings gathered at drop sites and the landfill, has naturally decomposed over time.
To get your finished compost, visit the landfill during operating hours. When you arrive, tell the landfill scale house attendant you’re there for free compost. They will direct you to the compost loading area.
Finished compost is free to residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Supplies might be limited due to composting cycles. Please note that the compost material isn’t bagged, so bring a shovel and some empty containers. For bigger loads in double-axle trucks or larger, staff can use a loader to fill truck beds. There’s a small fee per ton for this service.
Using compost on lawns, gardens, farms, and parks adds organic matter to the soil. It boosts plant growth and helps conserve water. Compost also filters water, prevents nutrient runoff, and reduces soil erosion. Plus, it lowers our need for inorganic fertilizers.

Mattress & Box Spring Recycling
Old mattresses and box springs are made from a variety of recyclable and reusable materials, including fabric, foam, steel coils, and wooden frames. Dismantling and sorting the components from this material can be a slow, labor-intensive, and costly process.
By keeping mattresses and boxes out of the landfill, we conserve resources and avoid taking up valuable space. For this reason, the City of Sioux Falls has partnered with Revolution⁴ Recycling to collect mattresses and box springs for recycling at the landfill.
There’s a $14 fee for each mattress or box spring taken to the landfill for recycling. This covers the vendor’s processing costs.
