What Is a BMP?

A Best Management Practice (BMP) is an engineered system built to treat stormwater. It treats the water before it leaves the property. Many BMPs look like a small pond. They are usually near the edge of the property.

Do I Have to Maintain My BMP?

Yes. A properly maintained BMP operates as designed. Here's why this matters:

• A BMP that is not maintained can send dirty water into public streams. This violated the federal Clean Water Act.
• It can cause flooding. This flooding can damage your property, your neighbor's property, or public roads and pipes.
• Under City Ordinance Section 55.003, property owners must maintain their BMPs.
• The City has the right to inspect private BMPs as stated in City Ordinance Section 55.005.

What Maintenance Do I Need to Do?

The exact tasks depend on your type of BMP. Most BMPs need the same basic care:

• Mow, control weeds, and remove trash. Tall plants can damage the sides of the BMP. They can also spread weeds, attract burrowing animals, and hide problems. Overgrowth can block water flow. Blocked water can pool up and attract mosquitos and rodents.
• Fix damaged embankments. Repair erosion, animal holes, or large roots. These can let water leak through. Replant bare spots to stop erosion.
• Remove extra sediment on a regular basis.
• Check your BMP often to make sure pipes are not clogged or broken.

Do I Need to Be There for the Inspection?

No, you don't have to be there. You can attend if you want to learn more about proper care. If you'd like to be present, contact the City and use the information in your inspection notice.

Will I Get a Report After the Inspection?

Yes. You will get a report that will explain what was checked, the condition of your BMP, any problems found, and what needs to be addressed.

What If I Don't Make the Required Fixes?

If the problems indicated are not fixed within a reasonable time, the City may issue a Notice of Violation. If the problems are not resolved, the City will take further action.
