Complete Streets
The City of Sioux Falls provides a transportation network that allows safe and convenient travel. For users of all ages and abilities, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and motorists.
The Complete Streets approach prioritizes early planning for pedestrian, bicycle, and transit needs. That includes use of the Complete Streets Checklist.
Complete Streets Priorities
High-priority factors include:
- Corridors that provide primary access to a key destination such as a park, recreational area, school, retail area, or employment center.
- Corridors that offer access across a natural or man-made barrier such as a river or freeway.
- A corridor where relatively high numbers of non-motorized transportation can be anticipated.
- A road corridor that provides vital continuity or connectivity links to an existing trail or path network.
- Whether nearby routes already provide similar levels of convenience and connectivity.
Complete Streets Exceptions
The Complete Streets policy will apply to all street projects except under one or more of the following conditions as determined by the City Engineer:
- Routine maintenance and pavement preservation activities.
- Design features that would put roadway users at a relatively high safety risk.
- Design features that would impose excessive costs in relation to need or probable use.
