CommuniTree Assistance Program

CommuniTree

The CommuniTree Assistance Program aims to enhance public spaces by planting new street trees in eligible neighborhoods.

The city of Sioux Falls has received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Forest Service to fund a new program. This money can only be used in specific census tracts in Sioux Falls that the federal government has identified as eligible.

Tree planting under this program is scheduled to occur between 2026 and 2028.

Eligible Homeowners

  • If your property is eligible, you will receive a letter from the City of Sioux Falls inviting you to participate and make your tree selection by calling the Helpline Center at 211. Call 2-1-1 any day between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.

  • Letters sent to eligible property owners will include a QR code allowing them to log a tree selection online.

  • You will be notified approximately one month before your tree is scheduled to be planted in the spring or fall of 2026 through 2028.

  • Participation is completely voluntary. If we do not receive a response from you, we will assume you are opting out of the program.

What the Program Includes

This program is offered at no cost to eligible homeowners in qualified census tracts. The City will contact you directly if your property is eligible to participate. This program is part of a grant from the U.S. Forest Service and is available on a first-come, first-served basis while grant funding lasts.

The program includes:

  • A Free Tree: Select a tree from a list of approved species. Eligible households will be able to select their top two preference of tree species. We’ll work to accommodate your top choices! If you don't have a preference, our team would be happy to select one from the list for you.

  • Professional Installation: The street tree will be professionally planted in the public right-of-way (the area between the sidewalk and the street curb where the city has legal authority). The planting site will follow city regulations for planting on the right-of-way.

  • First-Year Maintenance: The program covers the cost of care and maintenance for the new tree’s first growing season.*

*Please note: After the first growing season, the responsibility for the tree’s ongoing care and maintenance will be transferred to the property owner.
