CPR Education
CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is used when someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally. This can happen during heart or lung-related health emergency. CPR is designed to keep the blood circulating to the brain until breathing and heartbeat resumes.
The education programs are offered at the Public Safety Campus (4300 E. 60th St N.) near Veterans Parkway and Interstate 90.
Educational CPR Training
This course is designed for groups or individuals who do not need CPR certification but want to learn how to perform CPR. The instructor will teach how to recognize an emergency and how to act fast when minutes matter most.
The class also teaches how to perform or use:
- Hands-only CPR
- AED (automated external defibrillator)
Education CPR Training classes are available at 6:30 p.m. each third Thursday of the month. The class is free and approximately one hour long. Registration is strongly encouraged.

CPR Certification
American Heart Association® Certification
These certifications are offered in a blended-learning format that combines online learning from AHA and hands-on skills practice led by Sioux Falls Fire Rescue. Two types of certifications are available:
- Heartcode BLS®: This course is intended for healthcare professionals only. Students are expected to have previous medical training.
- Heartsaver®: Courses that cover CPR, AEDs, and basic first aid for those with limited or no medical training. A pediatric-focused course is available for childcare providers.
Note: Check with your employer, school or licensing body before registering if you are unsure on which course to take.
How to complete a certification
1. Register for an online class
All AHA certifications require that students complete the online portion prior to registering for hands-on skills practice. Each student will receive a printed certificate after completing this online module.
2. Register for a hands-on skills session
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue offers monthly hands-on skills sessions. A printed certificate of completion from the online module must be presented at the skills session.
