The Sioux Falls Regional Landfill plays a crucial role in the efficient and responsible handling of waste for Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities. Waste haulers are licensed to transport waste from homes to the landfill. Residents can also bring their own loads and receive one free annual pass.

Free Compost Available
Residents living in Sioux Falls and within the five-county region of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha & Turner counties are eligible to receive free organic compost. The finished compost material is made from leaves and grass clippings collected from the seasonal drop sites and at the landfill, which have naturally decomposed over time.
To get your supply of finished compost material, visit the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill during normal operating hours. Notify the landfill scale house attendant upon arrival that you're there for the free compost, and you will be directed to the compost loading area. Please note the compost is not bagged, so bring a shovel and empty containers. For a small fee, the landfill staff can use a loader to scoop and fill truck beds with compost.
Mattress & Box Spring Recycling
Old mattresses and box springs are made up of all types of recyclable and reusable materials, such as fabric, foam, steel coils, and wooden frames. Dismantling and sorting the components from this material can be a labor-intensive, costly, and slow process.
By keeping mattresses and boxes out of the landfill, it conserves resources and avoids taking up valuable space in the landfill. For this reason, the City of Sioux Falls has partnered with Revolution⁴ Recycling to collect mattresses and box springs for recycling at the landfill.
There is a charge of $14.00 per mattress or box spring brought to the landfill for recycling to cover the vendor’s processing costs.
