Annual Free Landfill Pass

Free pass for landfill

Pick the day, and once a year, residents can bring one load of material to the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill free of charge. This program promotes proper waste disposal and environmental responsibility. It helps make our community a cleaner and safer place for everyone.

Be Sure to Secure Your Load —Tarps or tie-downs are required to properly secure loads. A $31 fee will be charged if loads aren’t properly secured upon arrival at the landfill.

Program Eligibility and Load Restrictions

  • Eligible Service Area: Residents must live in Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, or Turner County. This includes residents living in single-family and multifamily properties, such as apartments and townhomes. Visit the Service Area Map to check if your address qualifies for this program.

  • Limits: Residents are allowed one free visit per household each calendar year. Free passes are issued based on household address, not individual residents. If you’re not sure if you have used your pass this year, call the landfill staff at 605-367-8162 before bringing your materials to the landfill.

  • Accepted Materials: The landfill accepts non-hazardous waste materials. This includes garbage, yard debris, construction and demolition debris, furniture, appliances, mattresses, and box springs (limit two pieces of any combination). Tires with rims removed are accepted in quantities of up to four, with a diameter of 21 inches or less. Recyclables should not be mixed in with your load.

  • Load Limits: One load of material per free pass with a net vehicle weight under 1,000 pounds or material. Fees will be charged for weights over this limit.

Be Prepared to Show Your ID

Residents must present proof of residency for scanning to receive one annual single-use free landfill pass. Acceptable proof of residency in the five-county area includes the following:

  1. A valid South Dakota driver’s license showing your current address. The unit number must be included on your license if you live in a multifamily property.

  2. A valid South Dakota ID card showing your current address. The unit number must be included on your license if you live in a multifamily property.

  3. Mailed documents, along with a state-issued ID, confirming your name and current address. Accepted mailed documents must match the name on the state-issued ID. They should have the resident’s physical address (no P.O. Boxes) and be dated within three months of arrival at the landfill. Handwritten documents or electronic bills are not accepted. Common mailed documents include a utility or phone bill, a bank or mortgage statement, a pay stub, a property rental receipt, an insurance policy, tax forms, or a vehicle registration.

Note: Expired driver’s licenses or state IDs are NOT accepted as proof of residency.
