Mayor’s Youth Council Applications Open

Published on February 26, 2025

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025–2026 Mayor’s Youth Council. The opportunity is open to students who live in Sioux Falls and will be high school juniors or seniors during the 2025–2026 school year.

“The Mayor’s Youth Council is an incredible opportunity for upperclassmen who live in Sioux Falls,” said Chad Quissell, Talent Acquisition Coordinator for the City of Sioux Falls. “Students are able to meet directly with City leaders across departments to learn about City operations and further develop their leadership skills. We encourage those interested in learning more about their community to apply.”

Public, private, or home-educated students are eligible to apply. Mayor Paul TenHaken started the Mayor’s Youth Council in 2021 to provide youth the opportunity to learn about City government and share input on important community issues. The Mayor’s Youth Council meets monthly during the school year in addition to possible other activities and volunteer events. Selected students will connect with Mayor Paul TenHaken, other City leaders, and City Councilors throughout their time on the council. During the monthly meetings, they will take tours to gain insight into various City facilities, like the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill, the Water Purification Plant, the Street Division, and the Public Safety Campus.

“The Mayor’s Youth Council has provided me and my peers with some unique experiences,” said Adeline Roths, a senior at Lincoln High School and current Mayor’s Youth Council member. “As I prepare for my future after high school, this opportunity has empowered me to use my voice and encourage others my age to do the same.”

While sitting on the Mayor’s Youth Council, students also have the opportunity to give back to the community through group volunteer efforts while also learning about local nonprofits. Applications are due Sunday, March 16. The application process involves basic information about the applicant, several short answer questions, and a letter of recommendation written by a teacher or school staff member. Students are encouraged to visit siouxfalls.gov/myc to learn more information and apply.
