City Opens Free Leaf and Branch Drop Sites Saturday

Published on April 10, 2026

The City of Sioux Falls will open two free seasonal leaf and branch drop sites April 11 to May 24. The sites are located on N. Lyon Boulevard near the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds and on Chambers Street near the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Both drop sites are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“Spring is a busy time for yard cleanup, and these drop sites make it easy for residents to dispose of leaves and branches responsibly,” said Don Kuper, sanitary landfill superintendent for the city. “By keeping these materials out of the landfill, we can recycle branches into mulch and compost leaves, helping both the environment and our community.”

The drop sites are for residential use only. Cars, pickups, full-size SUVs, vans and trailers are accepted. Materials from lawn service companies, commercial businesses and double-axle trailers are not accepted and must be taken directly to the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill.

Leaves and branches must be separated, and leaves must be removed from plastic bags. Leaves in paper bags are acceptable. All loads must be covered with a tarp or transported in an enclosed vehicle. Plastic bags, stumps, rubble and household garbage are not accepted.

Discarded branches are ground up and repurposed into mulch, while leaves are composted. Residents can pick up compost for free year-round at the landfill and seasonal drop sites. Compost is available during operating hours on a first-come, first-served basis, and residents must collect and carry it themselves.
