Jacobson Plaza Phase 2 is now open, adding gathering space, a scenic overlook and improved pedestrian connections among Falls Park, the Levitt Shell, Jacobson Plaza and the Steel District.
The project includes a large, level lawn between the Levitt Shell and Jacobson Plaza that will support recreation, community gatherings and events throughout the year.
"With the completion of Jacobson Plaza’s second phase, we have successfully transformed a former scrap yard into a vibrant destination where residents and visitors can gather, connect and create lasting memories,” Sioux Falls Mayor Christine Erickson said. “This remarkable space is a testament to what is possible when a community comes together, and it would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity and vision of the Jacobson family and our philanthropic partners."
The project also includes a dedicated plaza with integrated lighting and electrical infrastructure.
The city plans to use the space as the permanent home for its large Christmas tree, holiday celebrations and other community events.
A new overlook provides views of the upper falls and the Big Sioux River. Accessible pathways and new seating will help visitors navigate and use the area.
“Jacobson Plaza is quickly becoming one of Sioux Falls’ defining public spaces, and this project gives residents and visitors another way to gather, enjoy the outdoors and experience downtown,” said Brett Kollars, assistant director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Sioux Falls. “The improvements strengthen connections among key destinations and create a space the community can use throughout the year.”
The $2.65 million project was more than 90% funded by Garry Jacobson and Rob Everist through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. Jacobson is the namesake and lead donor for Jacobson Plaza.
“Garry and Rob are visionary donors who wanted to make sure the already beloved Jacobson Plaza was connected to other amenities near Falls Park and downtown,” said Andy Patterson, CEO of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. “Their generosity was the extra step needed to allow this park to feel more integrated into downtown.”
The Sioux Falls City Council approved the project in March 2026, including $200,000 in city funding.
