Recycling rates are calculated by dividing the total amount of recyclables by the total amount of solid waste hauled within the five-county region (Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha & Turner Counties) served by the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill.
By City ordinance, all licensed commercial waste haulers are annually required to achieve the standard of at least 80 percent of the recycling goal. The 2026, the recycling goal is 16.3%, and the recycling standard is 13.0%. Haulers who do not meet the standard receive a surcharge.
