Residential Garbage Service

Here are some general guidelines and ordinances to follow when preparing and setting out garbage for curbside collection (City of Sioux Falls Ordinance, Ch. 57).

Curbside Garbage Collection

Step 1.Setting up waste collection services:

Each occupant, owner, or manager is responsible for hiring a waste hauling company to provide collection services for garbage and recyclable materials.
Sioux Falls operates an open market system, allowing residents and businesses to choose their preferred garbage hauler. For more information on selecting your waste hauler, visit Selecting Your Garbage Hauler.
Garbage must be picked up at least once a week, and recyclable materials at least twice a month.

Step 2.Preparing your garbage for collection:

Bag your trash. All household garbage should go in securely tied bags, including waste placed inside garbage carts. Bagging your garbage helps reduce odors and pest problems.
Required recyclables should not be placed in your garbage. Household Hazardous Waste, electronic items, and tires should not be placed in the garbage either.
Please be sure to double-bag diapers and pet waste before placing them in your garage to help safeguard the health of the crew members working in your neighborhood.
In addition to bagging all your garbage, check with your waste hauler for the best ways to prevent spillage on high-wind days. Options might include placing your heaviest garbage in a thick bag near the top of your cart with the lid closed, keeping your cart closer to your house, or securing the lid with a bungee cord.

Step 3.Setting out your garbage for collection:

Keep your container lid closed. Overfilled garbage carts may tip over before collection occurs and are more likely to attract animals to the area. Property owners are responsible for cleaning up any waste that spills or blows out of containers or bags prior to collection.
Put your garbage out for pickup by 6 a.m. on your scheduled day. Late set-outs can disrupt the entire route and cause delays for other neighborhoods.
Place your garbage containers as close to the street as possible without blocking sidewalks, driveways, or creating traffic hazards. The closer they are to the curb, the less distance crews must travel, which helps reduce the risk of slips, especially in winter. Remember - close to the street, but not in the street.
