Overview

Here are some general guidelines and ordinances to follow when preparing and setting out garbage for curbside collection (City of Sioux Falls Ordinance, Ch. 57).

Do not dispose of hot ashes or rechargeable batteries in your garbage — these items can spark fires in collection carts, trucks, or at the landfill. See Prevent Waste Fires – Keep Hazardous Materials Out of Your Waste to find out more.

Setting up waste collection services

• Each occupant, owner, or manager is responsible for hiring a waste hauling company to provide collection services for garbage and recyclable materials.
• Be sure to select the garbage bin size that best fits your needs. Each waste hauler offers at least two garbage bin sizes at different rates.
• Sioux Falls operates an open market system, allowing residents and businesses to choose their preferred garbage hauler. For more information on selecting your waste hauler, visit Selecting Your Garbage Hauler.
• Garbage must be picked up at least once a week, and recyclable materials at least twice a month.

Preparing your garbage for collection

• 
  Bag all trash. All household garbage should go in securely tied bags, including waste placed inside garbage bins. Bagging your garbage helps reduce odors and pest problems.
• Required recyclablesshould not be placed in your garbage. Household Hazardous Waste, electronic items, and tires should not be placed in the garbage either.
• Please be sure to double-bag diapers and pet waste before placing them in your garage to help safeguard the health of the crew members working in your neighborhood.
• On high-wind days, be sure to keep lids closed. Check with your waste hauler for the best ways to prevent spillage on high-wind days. Options might include placing your heaviest garbage in a thick bag near the top of your bin with the lid closed, keeping your bin closer to your house, or securing the lid with a bungee cord.

Setting out your garbage for collection

• Keep your bin lid closed. Overfilled garbage carts may tip over before collection occurs and are more likely to attract animals to the area. Property owners are responsible for cleaning up any waste that spills or blows out of containers or bags prior to collection.
• Do not overfill your bin or hay-stack bags on top of the bin.
• Set out your bin by 6 AM on your scheduled collection day. Late set outs can disrupt the entire route and cause delays for other neighborhoods.
• Place your bin near the edge of the street without blocking sidewalks, driveways, or creating a traffic hazard. Do not set bins in the street.

Prevent Waste Fires – Keep Hazardous Materials Out of Your Waste

Improperly disposing of certain materials can lead to hazardous fires in garbage trucks, at processing facilities, or in landfills.

These items can easily ignite and pose serious risks to your family & neighbors, collection crews & waste workers, as well as firefighters & emergency responders.

NEVER place the following items in your waste containers:

Rechargeable batteries or items containing them — such as power tool batteries, electric toothbrushes, or vape pens.

Flammable or combustible liquids — such as gasoline or solvents.

Recently burned materials — such as fireplace ashes, cooking coals, or burn barrel debris.

Explosives - such as fireworks or ammunition.

Safe Disposal Tips

• Batteries, liquids, and fireworks should be properly disposed of at the Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility
• Let ashes and coals from fire pits, fireplaces, or grills cool for at least 3 days, or douse them thoroughly with water before disposing of them in the trash.
