Reduce, Repair & Reuse
By focusing on reducing waste, repairing what we have, and reusing items, we can all make a positive impact on the environment and often save money in the process.
Reduce
The best way to reduce waste is to prevent it from being created in the first place. We can easily do that by reusing what we already have and buying only what we truly need.
- Use mini flavor drink packets or drops with a refillable water bottle to mix up your favorite beverages.
- Go paperless whenever possible, like signing up for electronic billing or downloading event tickets to your smartphone.
- Select refillable options when shopping, instead of buying a new dispenser each time. It’s like putting money back in your own pocket.
- Avoid buying single-use items like disposable plates or coffee pods.
- Bring your own containers to the store to load up dry foods and snacks from the bulk bins. No need to pay for all that wasteful packaging.
- Rent or borrow equipment or tools that you rarely need.
- If you must purchase new items, select durable products that will last longer. You’ll be saving money in the long run.
Repair
A good way to reduce waste is by fixing items instead of throwing them away. Repair what you can and seek out local repair shops for other items.
- Have a cobbler retread a pair of shoes or visit a tailor to let the hem out of those pants.
- Take your laptop to a local tech repair business. It's way cheaper than buying a replacement.
- Research online to see if you can fix something yourself. Chances are, there’s a YouTube video with step-by-step instructions you can follow.
- Keep your appliances in good condition by scheduling regular maintenance. A little LTC can go a long way in extending their life.
- Invest in a simple repair kit for quick fixes like repairing your reading glasses.
Reuse
Discovering creative ways to reuse old items is a great way to reduce waste. This practice, often called upcycling, gives unwanted items a second life.
- Bring reusable containers or bags when dining out to avoid taking home wasteful foam takeout boxes. A simple habit that reduces waste.
- Get creative with repurposing — turn glass jars into storage, old T-shirts into cleaning rags, or unused pallets into cool DIY furniture.
- Give away items in good condition or host a swap with friends or neighbors.
- Shop second-hand at thrift stores, garage sales, or online marketplaces. It’s budget-friendly, sustainable, and chic.
Buy Recycled
Don’t forget to also buy products made with recycled content. Check labels to see if a product or its packaging is made from recycled materials.
