Lockbox Program

Overview

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue requires all buildings to install a key lockbox if the building has:

  • Fire sprinklers
  • A fire alarm system
  • High‑pile combustible storage

These requirements come from the International Fire Code, as adopted by the City of Sioux Falls. Lock boxes are designed to help firefighters get into important areas quickly during an emergency.

Install a Lockbox

Your lockbox must:

  • Be within 20 feet of the main entrance.
  • Be mounted 6 feet above the ground.
    • Within reach is best practice for quick access for the fire department
  • Stay in a location approved by Sioux Falls Fire if changes are needed.

You must sign a liability release form before a box can be purchased or keys can be stored. This form is included in the application process on Customer Self Service.

Store Keys in the Lockbox

After installation:

  1. Contact Sioux Falls Fire at firecstgroup@siouxfalls.gov with your address and contact information.
  2. Sioux Falls Fire will contact you to schedule an install time.

Your box must contain keys to:

  • Mechanical rooms
  • Sprinkler risers
  • Fire alarm control panels
  • Electrical rooms
  • Elevator key boxes
  • Smoke or heat venting systems
  • Tenant Master key (not required but beneficial if available)

A single master key is preferred. If you use multiple keys, color code them:

  • Red: Fire protection
  • Yellow: Electrical
  • Green: Mechanical
  • Blue: Elevator

If you change a lock, contact Sioux Falls Fire. Staff will update the key in your box.
