Household Hazardous Waste Facility

various household hazardous waste products

The Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility is a permanent site where residents can drop off unwanted hazardous waste and electronics for recycling and proper disposal. This facility is available free of charge only to residents living within the five-county region of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner Counties.

Materials are NOT accepted at this facility from non-residential properties, such as businesses, farms, churches, or institutions.

Any material that can be harmful to your health and environment, if not properly used, stored, or disposed of, can be considered hazardous waste. Words like “caution,” “warning,” “danger,” or “flammable” on the label indicate that the product may be a hazardous material. These products could be corrosive, caustic, reactive, flammable, or toxic.

Planning Your Visit to the HHW Facility

Step 1.Preparing Your Materials for Drop-Off

  • All products must be in containers of five gallons (5-gal.) or less.
  • Leave products in their original containers.
  • Never mix materials together, as they may react, ignite, explode, or become unrecyclable.
  • Tightly seal all containers. If a container leaks, place it inside a larger non-leaking container.
  • Load your HHW materials in the truck bed or as far away from passengers as possible during transport.
  • If you plan to bring a large quantity of materials, please call 605-367-8695 in advance to schedule an appointment so we can ensure adequate staffing upon your arrival.

Hardened latex paint can be disposed of in your home garbage container, and empty spray or plastic bottles can be recycled in your home recycle bin.

Step 2.Accepted Materials

Items accepted at the HHW Facility include:

  • Paints: oil-based or latex paint, aerosol spray paint, paint thinners, stains, wood preservatives, and driveway sealers.
  • Automotive: motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, brake fluid, and car batteries.
  • Light Bulbs: fluorescent lamps, and CFL bulbs. No ballast
  • Lawn Care: pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
  • Cleaners: soaps, degreasers, detergents, polishes, pool chemicals, bleach, and hydrochloric acids.
  • Adhesives: glues, epoxies, adhesive aerosols, and roof tars.
  • Flammables: contaminated and unusable fuels, propane cylinders, unexploded fireworks, and ammunition (from .22 up to .50bmg rounds, which includes shotgun shells).
  • Home Devices: thermometers, thermostats, fire extinguishers, and freon cylinders.
  • Batteries: household, car, and rechargeable batteries.
  • Electronics: televisions, computers, and microwaves. Visit Electronics Recycling for more information on accepted electronics.

Fuels & fluids must be in containers of 5 gallons or less in volume.

Step 3.Arriving at the Facility

  • Avoid longer wait times by visiting the HHW Facility during non-peak hours. The busiest times are typically between 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM, and the busiest days are Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • Be prepared to show your driver’s license or another form of identification proving your residency within the five-county region.
  • When approaching the HHW facility, follow the signs to drive around the Environmental Center and then drive under the metal awning at the unloading area.
  • HHW Facility staff will greet you at your vehicle (no need to get out), record your residency, and unload the HHW items from your vehicle.

Do not drop off items after hours or when the facility is closed. Instead, please return at another time. Leaving materials outside of the HHW Facility can endanger wildlife, children, other citizens, or staff. Temperature changes can cause certain chemicals to react or explode. Dropping off items when the facility is closed is considered littering and is punishable under the City of Sioux Falls Ordinance, Chapter 57, with a fine of up to $200, plus court costs and/or 30 days in jail, as well as cleanup costs. State and federal regulations could also apply.

  • For your safety and the safety of others, smoking is prohibited in or near the HHW Facility - this includes smoking in your vehicle while at the facility.
  • Any unaccepted items or containers used for transporting household hazardous waste to the HHW Facility must be taken home with you for reuse or disposal.

The Reuse Room, located inside the HHW Facility, offers household and automotive chemicals for residents to take. The items have been approved by staff for being in good, reusable condition and in sufficient quantities. Residents may pick up to three (3) items each week at no cost.

Please note that HHW staff cannot guarantee the quality of the products, but each item is inspected before being made available to the public.
